Simple ruching set into patchwork blocks creates interesting textured effects. You might try creating a sampler quilt using folded and ruched effects. A quick ruching can be created with shrinkable fabric, which crinkles up when steamed.

Ruching – This is a form of gathering that may also be called furrowing or waffles. The gathers are made across the width and length of a piece of fabric in a grid-like arrangement, forming a crinkled effect that is very attractive. Fabric treated this way can be used as decorative panels. Ruching can also be done in a circular fashion to produce a crinkly flower-like effect. If fabric is ruched with elastic it is called shirring, which is the basis of smocking. You can also create a ruched effect by using shrinkable fabric.
